Mrs. Ed. Merner, New Hamburg
1 cupful sugar, 1 cupful of salt, 1 good-sized root of horseradish, 1 tablespoonful of white mustard seed, 1 gallon of vinegar, mixed spice to taste, boil the above ingredients, then allow the prepared vinegar to become cold before putting in the cucumbers. Use the smallest pickles as the largest ones do not always become thoroughly pickled, but the small ones, this way of preparing them is excellent, crisp plump and tender when once put up by this easy method, you will never again resort to the old ways of making cucumber pickles.

Notes |
- Death of Mrs. Ed. Merner
The death occurred at her home here on Friday evening, May 12th, of Mrs. Edward Merner, in her 66th year. She had been confined to bed for the past three weeks suffering with an affection of the heart, which caused her demise. The deceased whose maiden name was Emma Alteman was born in Stratford. Since her marriage to Mr. Merner she resided for some years in Brandon, Manitoba, and in 1898 came to New Hamburg with her husband when Mr. Merner established the felt boot factory, one of New Hamburg's flourishing industries, and known as the Hamburg Felt Boot Co. Ltd. of which he is head. The late Mrs. Merner was of a friendly and cheerful disposition and leaves behind a large circle of friends who deeply regret her passing. She leaves her sorrowing husband and one brother, Mr. John Alteman, of Bradwardine, Man. She was predeceased by two sisters and one brother. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon with services at the home of Rev. Mr. Pletch, pastor of the local Evangelical Church, where the family worshipped. Interment took place in Riverside Cemetery. A large concourse of relatives and friends were in attendance and many beautiful floral tributes were sent by sympathizing relatives and friends.
