  Samuel Baumann, "was born February 19th, 1803, and died February 15th, 1866. He was married to Nancy Burkholder who was born March 26th, 1810, and died March 16th, 1882. They had two children" Eby, Ezra E. (1895). A biographical history of Waterloo township and other townships of the county: being a history of the early settlers and their descendants, mostly all of Pennsylvania Dutch origin: as also much other unpublished historical information chiefly of a local character. Berlin [Kitchener, Ont.]: [s.n.]. _____________________ SAMUEL B. BAUMANN came from Pennsylvania in 1826 and settled on the west half of Lot 5 James Wilson Tract on the site of the nresent village of Bloomingdale. It has not been definitely established who named the village. It may have been an early settler from Pennsylvania after a post hamlet of that name in Lancaster County. ''And when these toils rewarding Broad lands at length they'll claim And call the new possession By some familiar name". ----- Agnes Strickland. A local story handed down for generations says that Samuel Baumann was so imoressed by the beauty and profusion of wild plum blossoms when he arrived that he exclaimed "Der blotz sed B1umendahl haesa" (This place should be called Bloomingdale). Samuel Baumann was an enterprising character and had a woollen mill in operation prior to 1840. This industry attracted immigrants who came to Canada in large numbers at this time, and before long a small hamlet was formed.
