Notes |
- Supposed Poisoning Case.
A woman by the name of Mrs. Catharine Hickie, died suddenly in Galt, on Thursday afternoon last. On Friday the body was taken to the Roman Catholic burying ground in Preston, and interred. Suspicions of foul play having arisen, Coroner Seagram, of Galt, determined to hold an inquest, and for that purpose summoned the following gentlemen as a jury:
MR. JOHN YOUNG, Foreman.
Mr. William Walker, Francis Dennis, John Casey, William Kay, Daniel Kerr, David Byrns, Mr. David Stuer, A. Anderson, A. Ramsay, James Willis, R. Charter, W. H. Benn.
The body having been removed upon Friday afternoon before the Jury arrived, they adjourned until the following morning, when they proceeded to Preston, had the body disinterred. and Dr. Kostech, of Preston, held a post mortem examination. On an examination of the stomach, no evidences of poison having been administered could be found, and there were no marks of external violence. The evidence of Dr. Koetsch rather went to show that the poor woman had fallen a victim to the use of intoxicating liquors. The jury then returned to the Inkerman Inn, Galt, where a number of witnesses were examined, and the following verdict rendered through the foreman, Mr. Young, "That the deceased Catharine Hickie came to her death suddenly, from some cause or causes unknown to us.
The circumstances connected with this matter were somewhat suspicious, but still there seems to have been but slight grounds for suspicion that poisoning had been resorted to. At twelve 'clock when Mrs. Hickie's son left the house, she was apparently quite well, and in company with another woman named Elizabeth Cain. At four o'clock when he returned, he found her dead, and the woman Cain gone. Suspicion at once rested upon the latter, but her statement as well as the evidence of Dr. Koetsch, would seem to indicate that the deceased being long addicted to drinking, death had come suddenly upon her. - [Galt Reformer.
