    Misfortune 1837
    • In 1837 at the time of the war they resolved to move to Oxford county and took passage on the unfortunate vessel "Sir Robert Peel." All went well up the St. Lawrence river, until they arrived at Walesse's Island, where the vessel was attacked by the enemies, the passengers driven ashore at the point of the bayonet, the vessel ransacked and robbed of its valuables and set on fire. Here they lost everything, bag and baggage, as they used to say, save the lives of themselves and their five little children, three of which had to be carried of the boat to escape from the roaring flames off the burning vessel. Deceased used to say that she stood on shore when the vessel was burned to the water's level and saw the smoke stack tumble into the water.
