________
DEATH OF J. W. BAUMAN.
Career of Prof. Bauman who Died Sunday Night in Hamilton where he was well Known. Death was due to Paralysis.
In Hamilton on Sunday evening the death occurred of Mr. Joseph W. Bauman, son of Henry B. Bauman, died in Berlin in 1874.
The funeral was held in Berlin on Wednesday at 2 p. m., from the residence of Mr. Albert Roos, to Mount Hope cemetery.
Deceased was born in Berlin on October 29th, 1846. He was a graduate of the famous Academy of Musiv of Leipsic, Germany, and was engaged in giving instructions in all kinds of music in Hamilton. He was unmarried. Deceased was a first cousin of Mr. Herbert J. Bowman, County Clerk, and of Mrs. Albert Roos, of Berlin. His father was a native of Berks County, Pennsylvania and came to Canada when a young man and in 1837 in company with the late John Hoffman, opened the second store in Berlin.
In connection with the death of Prof. Baumann, the Hamilton Spectator on Monday had the following:-
J. W. Baumann is dead. Citizens will be shocked to hear of the death of one of the best known and most popular of Hamilton men. While Mr. Baumann had not been well since he had a severe illness about a year ago he had not been forced to remain indoors. He went out on Saturday afternoon and gave violin lessons to several of his pupils. Yesterday he was in his usual health but last night he was attacked by paralysis, and between nine and ten o'clock was removed to St. Joseph's hospital where he breathed his last about midnight.
Born in Berlin, Ont., of German parents, Mr. Baumann resided there in the early part of his life. It was about twenty years ago that he came to Hamilton, and in that twenty years he made hosts of friends. Mr. Baumann was famous as a violin teacher. He was gifted with extraordinary ability in the musical line, and could have had a professorship at one of the Leipsic conservatories, if he had been so minded. He was the foremost violin teacher in Canada, and his death will create a profound feeling of regret among the musicians of Canada. In musical circles he was always a very prominent figure. He was the instructor of two famous violinists George Fox and Miss Nora Clench, the latter famous the world over. He had violin classes here and in Toronto. His musical career was very successful, but he could have risen to a higher and better position in the musical world if he had been willing to leave Canada. He was content, however, to occupy a lowlier sphere than that which his talents fitted him for. About fifteen years ago he toured Canada with George Fox, violinist; Mrs. Caldwell, soprano soloist; and Miss Jessie Alexander, elocutionist. The series of concerts which these three gave under his management made Mr. Baumann famous. Later he toured Canada with his brilliant pupil, Miss Nora Clench, and that tour gave Miss Clench a start on the pathway of fame. Mr. Baumann was a man of very quiet personality, and he had but one hobby - that of music. There are lew, if any, musicians who had a better or wider acquaintance with it than he did. He was also a Shakspearean student of note.
