Notes |
- A wealthy man in his native Scotland, William Scott, had immigrated to Canada around 1832. Scott had town-building in his long-range plans. Scott commenced by constructing two homes. One, the present Voisin residence, was Scott's country estate; the second smaller home, Scott's "town house" is now the location of the Waterlot Restaurant. These necessities in order, Scott now worked diligently and energetically to build a settlement to surround them. In quick succession, Scott dammed the Nith River flowing through the proposed settlement tract, built a sawmill, flourmill, fabric mill, distillery and hotel.

He also erected and operated a saw-mill, deriving his power from Smith's Creek. Paul Bechner was the next man to locate here. Senator Merner came here sometime in the year 1833 and opened a blacksmith shop which was followed by a wagon and carriage repair shop. The latter was carried on until 1847. ...
