  • Notes
    • HOY, Dora ("Dodi") Isabel Dodi slipped away at Langley Memorial Hospital, in British Columbia, on March 4, 2014, a few weeks short of her 90th birthday. She remained an elegant and gracious woman until the end. Dodi was pre-deceased by her husband of 67 years, Thomas Richard ("Dick") Hoy, and her sisters, Alix Henderson and Mary Brown. She is survived by her children Tom (Catherine), Geoff (Tanys) and Alix (Mark Feldman), grandchildren Clara (Eric Shin), Hilda, Allison, Caitlin, Nicholas, and Estée, and great-grandchildren Isabelle and Olivia Shin. Dodi was born in Elora, Ontario on March 29, 1924. Her parents, Thomas Carswell and Polly Stewart, died when she was young. Her devoted older sisters and their husbands, Dave Henderson and Albert ("Brownie") Brown, did their best to raise the rebellious Dodi. She escaped the confines of Galt, Ontario by enlisting in the Air Force: the naval training base was too close to home. While stationed at Boundary Bay, B.C., she met Dick -funny, athletic, handsome, and a fabulous dancer. They married within months. Their post-war life began in Qualicum Beach, on Vancouver Island - where the beautiful Dodi, who had scarcely set foot in a kitchen, learned to master a wood stove in a drafty cottage - and continued in Vancouver. They settled in Calgary in 1954 and lived there until Dick's death in 2010. The following year, a serious fracture prompted Dodi's move to Fort Langley, B.C. - not far from the old Boundary Bay base - to be near her eldest son, Tom. Having grown up without a mother, Dodi was determined to be, and was, a wonderful and adored mother. She leaves many good friends in Calgary. Dodi hated funerals, and always said she wanted jazz music when she died. She was cremated following a private ceremony in Fort Langley. A gathering will be held in Calgary this summer for family and friends. There will be jazz, and we will do our best to imagine Dick and Dodi dancing, as they did so often did, impromptu, in the living room. The family thanks all the wonderful people who cared for Dodi while she was at the Simpson Manor in Fort Langley.
