Beloved husband of the late Alice M. (Bauer) Schmalz (1999). Dear father of Gary (Jane) of Cambridge. Janet (Bill) Cliff of Langley, B.C.. Greg (Norine) of Wilcox. Sask., Paul (Karla) of Mississauga, Therese Kvisle of Regina. Sask.. Joanne (Peter) Mumford of King City, Tony (Dorothy) of Cambridge. Mark (Sandy) of Yellowknife, NWT. Dale (Debbie) of Cambridge, John (Jennifer) of Dorchester. Lovingly remembered by 16 grandsons, 16 grand-daughters, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by his parents. Alfred and Wilma Schmalz; two sons. Michael and Joseph, one daughter, Marian and two brothers, Gerald and Allan.
Mr. Schmalz was born in Kitchener and had been a lifelong resident of the area. He was a member of St. Clement's RC Church, a Veteran of the Second World War, serving in the RCAF Coastal Command 1943-1945, the first president and founding member of the Conestoga Lake Cottager's Association, played left-wing for St. Michael's Majors Jr. "A" Hockey Team 1940-1943. He had a long career in the hotel business, running the Commercial Hotel in Formosa and the Queen's Hotel in Cambridge. In 1965 he accepted employment in Quality Management at Lear Siegler for 16 years, retiring in 1981.
The family will receive friends at the Barthel Funeral Home 586 Queenston Road, Cambridge today (Tuesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Clement's RC Church, 745 Duke Street. Cambridge on Thursday, May 29, 2003 at 10 a.m. Cremation to follow. As expressions of sympathy, donations to St. Clement's RC Church. Renovation Fund, would be gratefully appreciated by the family.
