Car Crew States Man Walked Directly Into Car's Path; Victim Hard Of Hearing
NINE DAUGHTERS SURVIVE
Believed to have failed to hear the approaching Grand River Railway train yesterday afternoon because of defective hearing, Charles Schultz 77, walked on to the tracks near Idylwild and was instantly killed. The accident happened at 3: 00 o'clock. Train man W. Sutton and Conductor E. Wildfong, both of Preston were in charge of the car. It being enroute to Hespeler having left Preston but five minutes before. From what can be learned the late Mr. Schultz was out in the woods at Idylwild. As the train approached he was noticed standing well away from the tracks altho not looking at the approaching train. When the radial was about a car length from him he suddenly commence to walk into its path, the car striking him on the right side and throwing his body 20 feet. He suffered severe head injuries and it is said both legs were also broken. Coroner Dr. Oaks of Preston and Chief David Crawford hurried to the scene immediately upon being notified. Dr. Oaks has called a preliminary inquest for this afternoon at two o'clock. After the jury has viewed the body the inquiry will adjourn for a week. The late Mr. Schultz was well known in Preston, having been born here 77 years' ago. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Schultz and had for 43 years, been a valuable employee of the Canadian Office and school Furniture company, here. Besides his wife he is survived by seven brothers, Henry, Robert, William and Otto of Preston, John and Elmer of Detroit and Emil of Kitchener. Nine daughters also survive. They are Mrs. Gardner of Galt, Clara, a registered nurse at Owen Sound and Margaret, Tilly, Mary. Gertrude, Florence, Doris and May, at home. The funeral will take place, Monday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock from the family residence on Argyle street. Rev. W. H. Knauff, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran church where the late Mr. Schultz attended, will officiate, Interment will be made in the Preston cemetery.
