Notes |
- Dr. John B. Lundy was born on January 23, 1826 in Whitechurch, near Newmarket in the County of York. He was the son of Isaac Lundy and Kezia Bostwick, Quakers who originated in Pennsylvania. Dr. Lundy spent the first twenty three years of his life on the family farm and then entered a Quaker boarding school at Picton. He subsequently taught school at Mariposa. Later he studied at Lewiston Academy and later taught school in Brownsville and Lloydtown. He then entered Buffalo University to study medicine and graduated in 1851. The following year he received a second degree from the University of Toronto Medical School. Following graduation Dr. Lundy practiced with his brother-in-law Dr. James Hunter in Baltimore for a year before coming to Sheffield to establish his medical practice. Over the next twenty six years he became one of the best known and most successful doctors in the area. In 1878 Dr. Lundy closed his Sheffield practice and moved to Galt where he hoped to follow a less strenuous practice. In 1887, hoping to slow down even further, Dr. Lundy entered into a partnership with Dr. Thomas Vardon. Fifteen months later sold his interest in the practice to his partner and retired to Preston where he died on August 20, 1903. He is buried in Mount View Cemetery.

______________
LUNDY, JOHN BOSTWICK was born into a Quaker family in Whitchurch Township, North York, on January 23, 1826. He spent some time teaching school at Mariposa and then studied medicine with his brother-in-law at Newmarket. He obtained his degree at the University of Buffalo in 1851 and began to practice at Sheffield.
For twenty five years he remained in Beverly Township, then sold his practice to Dr. Smith of Bosanquet and moved to Galt.
In Beverly he was esteemed not only as a physician but also for his political views. A confirmed Reformer, he actively supported that party, and although he never stood for election, he was responsible for the persistent Liberal bias of that area. His support of Reform policies was frequently the deciding factor in political contests.
His move to Galt in 1876 was followed by the establishment of a large practice without the hardships which had accompanied his country practice. At the beginning of 1886 Dr. T. W. Vardon of Hawkesville entered into partnership with him, and in 1888 he retired, moving to Preston where he bought the house "Hillcrest" above the mineral baths.
His continued interest in medicine resulted with friendship with other distinguished members of the profession, and his standing in the profession was marked by his election in 1889 as one of the Yice Presidents of the Ontario Medical Association.
On August 21, 1903, he died in his 78th. year. He was survived by his wife, three daughters and two sons, both of whom were physicians.
His death was a cause for universal regret. The Woodstock Sentinel Review said.
There never was a finer type of the country physician and his career should serve as a veritable inspiration to the younger members of the profession he loved so much.
The Weekly Reformer of August 27, 1903, begings a lengthy obituary with "Waterloo County's Grand Old Wan is no more" It says of him.
He was so eminently clean in his political career, that he stands a monument to the present age, of what a politician should be.
