Notes |
- JOSEPH JANSEN
PRESTON. Dec. 28 - Joseph Jansen, one of Preston's best known citizens, died at 6.45 o'clock last night at the home of his son-in-law, Henry Kremer. He was in his 81st year. The late Mr. Jansen had been ailing for about five months, though for two weeks his condition has been serious. The late Mr. Jansen was born in what is now called Limerick, on the outskirts of this town. For 33 years he was an employee of Clare Brothers and Company, Limited, following his trade as a moulder. He was, at one time, also employed by the P. E. Shantz Foundry here and for three years also plied his trade in a Guelph foundry. As a member of the local Moulders Union he took a keen interest in its affairs. A resident of Preston throughout his life-time, with the exception of the short time he was in Guelph, the deceased took a keen interest in municipal affairs. He was a member of the Separate school board here for 42 years, 35 of which he served as secretary-treasurer. Mr. Jansen's passing breaks what is believed to be the oldest marriage in the community. It was 88 [sic] years ago on November 28 that Mr. and Mrs. Jansen were united in matrimony in the old Catholic church at Guelph and Duke streets. He has been a faithful attendant at St. Clement's church throughout his years being also a member of the Holy Name Society. As one of the earlier residents of the town, Mr. Jansen was the first citizen to build a home on the southwest side of Waterloo street, besides his wife there survives one daughter, Mrs. Henry Kramer of Preston and one son, August of Kitchener, two children predeceased him years ago. The funeral will be held, on Wednesday morning from the home of Henry Kramer, 142 Waterloo street, Mass will be said at St. Clement's, church at 9 o'clock and interment will follow in the R.C. Cemetery.
