    • Herschel Henlere

Novelty pianist, composer, parodist, and comedian Herschel Henlere (1890\endash 1968), from Galt, Ontario, was part of a wave of Canadian artists that included Maud Allan, Beatrice Lillie, and Guy Lombardo who performed in British music hall and variety in the period 1890 to 1940. Although largely forgotten today, Henlere was a popular performer on the British music hall scene from 1920 to 1940. An eccentric comedian billed as 'The Well-Known French-Canadian Pianist Entertainer' and 'The Mirthful Music Master,' and shockingly known as 'Jizz,' signifying jazz and semen, Henlere was notorious for running long and typically appeared last on the bill so the curtain could close on him. A Salvador Dali look-alike, he drew on Surrealist and Dada aesthetics and on the ragtime, jazz, big band, and dance hall phenomena that were then sweeping Britain. Experimenting with percussive sound, he anticipated the prepared piano of John Cage. Henlere secured an original creative agency for himself and promoted a distinctive Canadian brand of showmanship overseas.

Variety, to fulfill the promise of its meaning, required acts like Herschel Henlere's comedy piano act. He did not fit any precisely defined type of act. Like Victor Sorge. who came on the scene a generation later, Herschel was both a gifted pianist and a comedian. He billed himself variously as "The Mirthful Music Master" and "The Poet of the Piano:'

Among the earliest records of his time in vaudeville was his stint as Anna Held's accompanist. He made his name, however, with his own novelty music act. He took popular songs and played them in various musical styles (as did forge with "Happy Birthday"), and Herschel was noted for dazzling audiences with quicksilver transitions from one composition to the next. He was popular in American vaudeville during the 1910s and capped his career in the United States with an appearance at the Palace in 1920. Herschel Henlere wrote a number of songs, including "Kismet, an Arabian Fox Trot," and made sound recordings and piano rolls. By 1921, he had based himself in England and played variety theatres and appeared in a few films, such as Soldiers of the King (1934), which starred Cicely Courtneidge, and Crazy People (1934). According to his grandnephew. Peter Mones, who has chronicled Henlere's career, Herschel made a Vitaphone short around 1930. He was still "working the halls" in 1956, only they were variety houses like Newcastle Empire. Henlerc performed in They Royal Variety of 18 November 1957, a gala that boasted performers like the Crazy Gang, Gracie Fields, Vera Lynn, Max Bygraves, Judy Garland, Count Basie, Harry Secombe and the Tiller Girls.
