Notes |
- With the demise last Thursday evening of Mr. Jacob Werlich, one of Preston's most valued citizens is removed from our midst. Born in Kitchener, the late Mr. Werlich next went to Guelph. While there he was a bench foreman and his work won for him approval and commendation. Being successful in the furniture line Mr. Werlich then purchased the old Guggisburg furniture store in Preston about 25 years ago. After a number of years he sold it to Messrs. Hall and Belt. For nine years he was out of this business when after the death of Mr. Belt, it was rebought by Mr. Werlich. Since then he has been one of the town's leading businessmen. Although of a rather quiet disposition he made many fast friends who will deeply miss him now. His welfare in the progress of the town was evidenced by his being councilman and reeve for some time. He was also a member of the Parks Board. In addition to his sorrowing wife, whom he wedded 37 years ago, and who was a well known Hespelerite in the person of Miss Nancie L. Stager, three brothers and three sisters survive, Messrs. William, John and Martin, all of Preston; Mrs. Halberstadt and Mrs. Clavelle of Brantford and Mrs. Knack, also of this town. Mrs. Angus Werlich of Wallaceburg, is a son and Mrs Kerby of Detroit, is a daughter. There are also two grandchildren, Esther and Edward Kerby. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon to the Preston cemetery.

_____________________
Jacob Werlich was born in Preston, the son of Wilhelm Magnus Werlich, a master weaver of fancy coverlets. He moved to Guelph where he was employed by the Burr Brothers as a bench foreman. Sometime around 1888 he returned to Preston where he purchased the Guggisberg cabinet factory. After a number of years he sold the business to Messrs. Hall and Belt but reacquired the business nine years later following the death of Mr. Belt. In 1906, in partnership with his brother John Werlich, Mr. Werlich established Werlich Bros. & Co. to manufacture upright player pianos, piano benches and music cabinets. He also operated an undertaking business for a time. Mr. Werlich was a member of the Preston Municipal council as a councilor in 1893 and as a deputy reeve in 1894. He also sat on the Waterloo County council in 1894. Mr. Werlich died on January 24, 1918 and is buried in the Preston Cemetery.
