- Miss Caroline Martin
PRESTON, Jan. 17 - A lifelong resident of Preston and a valued member of the teaching staff of the Preston Public School for 46 years, Miss Caroline Martin, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Martin, died at her home, 358 Queen St., early this morning. Miss Martin had been ailing for some time, but word of her death came as a distinct shock to numerous friends. Born in Preston, she received her education here, and was a graduate of the Toronto Normal School. In 1882 Miss Martin accepted a position as a member of the teaching staff of the Preston Public School, and continued in that capacity until her retirement in 1928. During her many years as a teacher, she was highly regarded by her students. Miss Martin was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, and the Ladies' Aid and Mission Societies of that church. She was a life member of the Preston Red Cross Society. Following her retirement from the teaching staff, she served for a short time on the Public School Board. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. John (Minnie) McClelland, of Toronto, and Mrs. Wilbur (Elizabeth) Hostrawser, of Preston. One sister, Mrs. Harry Pedder, predeceased in 1937, and two brothers, Jacob and Frederick, of Chicago, also predeceased her. The remains are resting at the Stager-Pass Funeral Home from where the funeral will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery.
