- The death occurred on Tuesday of John Ballantine, one of Preston's best known manufacturers and citizens. Deceased was in his 77th year, and had been ailing for some time past. He was head of the John Ballantine company, which conducted a successful machinery business here until it was taken in by the Canada Machinery corporation, but since the amalgamation Mr. Ballantine remained until a few months ago, when he was forced to retire owing to falling health, Deceased was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and with his wife came to this country about half a century ago. After living in Buffalo and Dundas for short periods he settled in Galt, where he was superintendent of the Goldie & McCulloch works for a number of years, and later manager of Cowan & Co. in the same town. He came to Preston eighteen years ago, when he went into business here. Deceased was a Free Methodist in religion. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. R. Pollard, and one son, Thomas, of Preston. The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon.

John was superintendent of Goldie & McCulloch Co. Ltd. later employed by Cowan & Co foundry where he became manager. Moving in 1895 to Preston where with his son Thomas he founded John Ballantine and Son Co. Ltd. The company made woodworkings machines. Later the company was purchased by Canada Machinery Corporation of Galt in 1910.
