- Former Resident of Berlin Passes Away
Widow of First Mayor of Berlin Passes Away At Guelph.
The Guelph Herald of December 8th has the following relative to a former resident of Berlin, Mrs. William Pipe, who died in that city on Monday. Mrs. Pipe was stricken with apoplexy about a year ago, and she gradually failed until her death.
Mrs. Pipe's death removes a member of an esteemed family, and another of the few connecting links with Guelph's earlier days. Her maiden name was Mary M. H. Harvey. She was born 76 years ago on Oct. 16th last at Niagara, Ont., her parents being the late John and Harriet Harvey. In 1852, when deceased was a girl, the family removed to Guelph from Hamilton. Deceased's father, the late John Harvey, was a prominent figure in Guelph's early history. He conducted a tannery business in this city, and was mayor of Guelph when the Prince of Wales visited here. The late Mrs. Pipe was educated in this city, and in 1861 was united in marriage to Dr. Wm. Pipe, then practicing in Berlin, of which he was the first mayor. Dr. Pipe died in 1873, and his widow then came to Guelph to reside with her father and mother till their death. She then went to live with her brother, Mr.Edmund Harvey, and has resided with him ever since.
Deceased is survived by four children. vix: Mr. Wm. Pipe, druggist, of Crescent City, Florida: Mr. Harvey Pipe, hardware merchant, of Amherst, N. S.: Mrs. (Rev.) Walter M. Loucks, Winnipeg. and Mrs. (Chas. L.) Nelles, of Guelph. A sister. Miss Harvey, and her brother. Mr. Edmund Harvey, also mourn her loss.
The funeral will be held today.
Ald. George Bumpel was called up. and asked regarding Dr. Pipe. the first Mayor of Berlin, but he stated that the Doctor died in 1873, and Ald. Rumpel did not arrive until the following year. He remembers very well hearing people talk about him.
Mr. Ward Bowlby was also called. and said that while he knew the Doctor and his wife very well, he did. not think he cared to say anything for publication.
Mr. Alex Millar, of the firm of Millar. Sims and Gregory, was asked whether he remembered the family. He said, "I well remember the Doctor and his wife. I knew him before he even studied medicine, and think The worked as a turner in one of the factories, Then he studied medicine, and practised here for a number of years."
Mr. A. A. Pipe, the coal dealer on South Foundry street, was seen, and he informed the Record that after the Doctor was married, he lived in the house now occupied by Mr. John Querrin, on North Queen street.
