Mrs. James D. Tredup, PO Box "G". Kaunakakai, Molkai, Hawaii 96748 USA has responded to our last issue of BRANCH NOTES in respect to the address given by Mrs. G.T. Barnes and her McDonalds, wishing to know whether the James mentioned in the article could have been some sort of relative to an ancestor of hers, Sweden McDonald. As among other information she provides the following:- Sweden McDonald was born in Scotland, and settled in the Galt are ca 1836, m either in Scotland or in Galt to Alice BELL of Kelso, a sister of Janet Bell the mother of honourable James Young-the cemetery in which they were interred was abandoned ca 1850 and so no clear record has been found,. There were seven children: Robert S,; my grandfather b 1843; a dau b ca 1840 who drowned July 1846; William b 12 Mar 1852, emigrated to USA 1867, worked as a blacksmith in Buffalo and Michigan, migrated to Merced California and d there 7 June 1914; Margaret who migrated to Buffalo and d there; Thomas b 1853 was living in Buffalo in 1870 and later lived either in Michigan or Ohio; (he had two dau's one of which later became Mrs. Irving V. (Maude) Yale, who was living in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan at the time of her death. My grandfather, Robert S. McDonald, emigrated from Galt to Buffalo ca 1867 where he m Ella Corlett ca 1868, worked as a blacksmith, Pharmacist, and at the time of his death was listed as a medical student ca 1885. Ella Corlett's family were listed as Methodists. I have not been able to find any record of my grandfather Robert's death or place of burial. I have never submitted a query to "BRANCH NOTES" - I should add that Robert McDonald's children Charles 1870-1918; Grace 1873-1970; and Stephen (my father) b 19 Oct 1884; d 14 Mar 1969 did not know much about their father, and apparently nothing about their grandparents. In one report Sweden McDonald is reported by his son William McDonald as having been a railway contractor in the employ of the government. Hon. James Young refers to him as a "road-builder{. The family appears to have had a predilection toward railroads, engineering and related occupations. There seems to have been some sort of hereditary liver complaint which took many of the family to, premature death in their 40's and 50's. I would welcome correspondence from persons knowledgeable about McDonald Family.
