  • Notes
    • MR. WALTER LINTON, who had come into Galt from his farm in Waterloo Township to spend his last days in town, as many have done. His love for his Bible and his Church was a strong, imperishable love. Devout in spirit, permeated with reverence and full of faith in the unseen Holy, his life was beautiful and attrac tive. He had a rich experimental knowledge of divine things, and looked for that in anyone who stood up as a teacher in the sacred desk. One Sabbath I had been preaching anniversary ser mons for a brother minister, and, as is customary among us, he had taken my place. When I returned I happened to meet Mr. Linton and asked him how he enjoyed the services of the preacher, when he remarked; "Aye, there was a lot o guess vvark yonder." One of the severest criticisms, I think, I ever heard from any lips. One day I called on him when he was unwell. I sat down on a chair at the head of the bed and enquired how he was, and after he had told me, he turned round and said, " I suppose there maun aye be something to tak us off." I said " Yes, that is true. When our appointed time has filled up its measure, we go whether we are well or ill." Some time after he was called up higher to enjoy the things he had often thought about sagely and seriously.

      ______________________

Mr. Walter Linton - This well-known and genial old resident closed his earthly record at an early hour on Wednesday morning. For months past Mr. Linton has been failing, treading slowly but surely the path that has but one ending; and in our last issue we mentioned his serious condition as also the improbability of any improvement therein. He sank rapidly toward the last, it being evident on Monday and Tuesday that the end was drawing near; and on Wednesday morning, without a struggle and scarcely a sign, our old friend passed into the dark valley.

Mr. Linton was born in the parish of Yarrow, Selkirkshire, Scotland, on the 15th Aug., 1815, thus being in the 74th year of his age. His boyhood was spent in the unromantic occupation (in company with Mr. Andrew Orr, of Dumfries,) of driving peat carts from "Shiran's Cleuch," (the name of his fathers' farm) to Hawick. When too old for this occupation he engaged with neighboring farmers, serving for years as both herd and hind on various farms in that part of Scotland; and our old friend always claimed with pride that the knowledge he obtained in those early years, was of inestimable value to him in his after life in Canada. In the year 1840 he was married in Scotland to Miss Jane Warwick, and although many years ago she preceded her husband to the grave (she died in Oct., 1858), it is worthy of remark that her aged mother still survives at the age of 92. Finding after this that life was somewhat cramped among the heather in his native land, Mr. Linton in 1841 made up his mind to remove to Canada. When he arrived in this country he at once proceeded to Waterloo Township, where he took up his homestead between New Aberdeen and Dundee, and where he resided until his removal to Galt a few years ago. All Mr. Linton's family, with the exception of John, (who was born in Scotland and died in 1882 in the Township of Moore, of which Township he was treasurer at the time of his death) were born on the homestead. Of the seven children born to his first wife John was mentioned above, died in 1882; two (Agnes and Margaret) were carried off by scarlet fever within a few days of each other at the respective ages of 3 and 1; and one (Walter) was killed by the kick of a horse in the year 1872. The surviving children are Mr. C.B. Linton, of the staff of teachers, Galt Central School; Mr. Ebenezer Linton, of the axle works, and Mrs. Charles Simpson, of Regina, NWT. Mr. Linton's first wife died in 1858, and some five or six years afterward he was again united in marriage to Miss Grieve, to whom six children were born. Of these there survive Thomas, Jane, James, Margaret and Walter.

Of Mr. Linton's life in Canada - of his struggle in the early years to keep a roof over the head of his rapidly growing family - it is needless here to speak. He and his wife took their full share of all the hardships incidental to the life of pioneers in a new country, and bore their part unsubduing the wilderness to the garden it is today. After a hard fight the battle was won, however; and out of his advancing prosperity Mr. Linton was enabled to give his children a good education. John and C.B. having for years been valued and successful teachers. Between two and three years ago Mr. Linton removed to Galt, where he erected a neat residence on the corner of George and Waterloo streets. He had met with an accidental fall some time previous; and ever since coming to reside in town has been somewhat frail; but his cheery and genial manner never failed him, and he was always ready with a laugh at what others would have looked serious. In religion our old friend was an old time Presbyterian, and in politics an unflinching Reformer.

Mr. Linton's funeral will take place today (Friday) at half-past 2 o'clock, form his late residence to Mount View Cemetery.
