________________
Nicholas Geib, the representative German farmer of Gaines township, died at his late farm residence Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1887, at the advanced age of 65 years.
The deceased was one of the early pioneers of Kent county. lie was born at Bavaria, Germany, Dec. 24, 1821, and came to America in 1844. He first settled in New York city, and from there went to Providence, R. I. In 1852, not being satisfied with his prospects, he moved to Waterloo county,Province of Ontario, Canada, where for five years he followed well-digging. There he remained until 1854, when he moved to Michigan, purchasing 160 acres on section 22.
He was a man of frugal habits and had accumulated $500 in cash by a practice of energy and economy. Believing that there was money in farming, he soon after purchased 160 acres more. These lands were then an unbroken wilderness, three miles from the nearest roadway and infested by a roving band of Indians and wild beasts of the forest. He was not discouraged, however, but labored hard to accomplish his object, and at death ranked fairly with the substantial citizens of Kent county.
In 1853 he led to the marriage altar Miss Elizabeth Shafer, who died in 1864, leaving him with three children, one of whom died later on and the other two are living. Mr. Geib was well known throughout the city and county.
