      J. M. SCULLY PASSES AWAY

One of the County's Most Prominent Men Dies at His Kitchener Home.

Death claimed another of Waterloo County's prominent and best citizens in the person of Mr. J. M. Scully, veteran auditor and clerk of the local surrogate court, which occurred suddenly at his home in Kitchener at 5.30 o'clock Thursday morning, June 25th, surrounded by members of the family. Deceased had attended to his business affairs as usual, returning the evening before from a motor trip to Guelph and retired apparently in his usual health.

The late Mr. Scully spent his entire lifetime in the Twin-City and his straight forward business dealings and public spiritness made him hundreds of friends who will deeply regret to learn of his passing. Possessed of sound business ability, he enjoyed the confidence and respect of all.

For many years the late Mr. Scully was auditor of the municipalities of Kitchener, Waterloo and the County of Waterloo, each of which will lose a faithful official in his passing. In Kitchener and Waterloo deceased effected many improvements in the system of accounting and as auditor was always open-minded and frequently adopted suggestions from men who did the practical work. He was an active member of the Rotary Club and was a regular attendant at the weekly luncheon and heartily co-operated with other members much younger than himself.

      A Prominent Conservative.

The late Mr. Scully was one of the most prominent Conservatives in the riding, a past president of the Conservative Association and an active member from 1870 until 1905. In 1908 he was appointed local registrar of the surrogate court. He was a member of the town council and reeve for several years, the oldest pastmaster of Grand River Lodge A. F. & A. M., Rotary Club and a director of the Waterloo Trust and Savings Company.

Deceased had reached the age of 75 years, having been born in Waterloo in 1850 a son of the late John Scully and wife, nee Hariett Penfold, of Irish and English birth respectively. He received his early education in the old Central School, now Suddaby school. When a young man he was appointed assistant deputy of deeds, which office he held for some years until he resigned and opened an office as auditor and conveyancer. Later he moved his office to Waterloo where he resided for a number of years when he returned to Kitchener and entered into partnership with his brother, J. Scully, under the firm name of Scully and Scully. The late Mr. Scully was one of the ablest accountants in Ontario, having the degree of F.C.A.

There survive a sorrowing wife three brothers and two sisters, all of Kitchener namely, Jeremiah Scully of Scully and Scully, auditors, Ed. I Scully of the Beaver Furniture Co., J. P. Scully, secretary of the Kitchener and Waterloo Manufacturers' Association, Miss Jane Scully and Miss Anne Scully.
