Rudy-Snyder House |
- This large, two storey fieldstone farmhouse was built by Daniel Rudy in 1847. The builder carved his name and the date of construction on one half of a grindstone and embedded it in the second storey front wall to the right of the door. Like many early mennonite houses it is built in the plain Georgian style and faces south.
The house retains many of its early features. Some of the original small-paned twelve-over-eight windows remain. A number of other windows are six-over-six panes. It also has small attic windows as well as a bell in a cupola which was rung to call the men in from the fields. In the 1870's, a brick doddy house was added (for the parents when the son took over the farm), the porch, the two-over-two paned windowsand the board and batten summer kitchen may also have been added at this time. Colourful granite stones with large corner blocks give the house a pleasant patchwork-quilt appearance. Custom was to plaster the stone work under the front verandah.
All facades of this historical "rural" Waterloo home were recognized in the designation of the structure as a Heritage Landmark.1a
