  • Notes
    • ARNOTT, WILLIAM JOSHUA was born in Simcoe County in 1867, attended public school, and without a grammar school education passed his matriculation examination, he began to teach at the age of seventeen, at Tiverton, and later at Magnetawan. In the summers he taught in Manitoba's rural schools. He entered Trinity College and graduated with honours in 1893.

In November of that year he took over the practice of Dr. J. A. McArthur, who was moving to Ohio. A few years later he located at the corner of Weber and Ontario streets. This property was subsequently purchased by Dr. H. M. Lackner and at present is the site of dental offices.

In 1902 he purchased the property on the west side of Frederick Street which had belonged to Dr. Mylius, and converted it into an Institute for the treatment of speech disabilities. This would appear to have been a successful venture as it was continued after his death.

He died suddenly on December 12, 1905 when he was just 44 years of age. As the newspapers stated the cause of death was cerebro-spinal meningitis, his medical attendants found it necessary to report that autopsy findings eliminated the possibility of infectious disease. Blame was attributed to an unspecified middle ear condition.

During the twelve years of his practice he had established himself as a prominent member of the profession, whose death was regarded as a considerable loss. Among his other activities he had been a member of the school board, and at the time of his death was President of the Berlin Musical Society. He was survived by his wife, the former Helen Krug, of Tavistock, and two sons.

      SUDDEN DEATH OF DR. ARNOTT

WAS ONE OF BERLIN'S LEADING PHYSICIANS AND WELL KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE TOWN AND VICINITY - AN INTERESTING CAREER CLOSED.

The sudden and untimely death of Dr. William J. Arnott on Tuesday afternoon cast a deep gloom throughout the town, and his removal is considered on all sides as an irreparable loss to Berlin, in which he has resided about twelve years, and had made himself exceedingly popular and highly respected with a large majority of the citizens.

On Sunday Dr. Arnott was performing his customary duties and appeared to be in the best of health It has been learned, however, tha about one o'clock during the night he suffered excruciating pain in one of his ears, and without alarming his wife he went downstairs into his office and walked the floor for hour with the expectation that it would pass away. Instead of the pain subsiding, it appeared to increase, an about five o'clock he summoned Dr S. B. Biehn. While they were consulting with each other the pain suddenly left the ear and went to the back of the head, and then to centre of the forehead. During the the day, as the result of emetics, the pain eased considerably and he was able to give prescriptions to his patients who called on him. He retired quite early in the evening and fell asleep, and when Mrs. Arnott was about to retire she did not awake him, as he appeared to be resting easily. About one o'clock Tuesday morning she again went to his bed side and he was still asleep. She considered that he had been relieved of his pain, and did not arouse him. A five o'clock she heard him breathing heavily, and turning on the light, he appeared to be unconscious. Mrs. Arnott hastily summoned Biehn, and after a brief examination, he called in Dr. Kalbfleisch. They made a thorough investigation of the condition of the patient, and decided to summon Dr. Caven, of Toronto, a specialist of brain diseases. The latter arrived at 9.20, but the skill of the three physicians was of no avail, and their patient passed away without regainig consciousness. It is believed that Dr Arnott suffered an injury in the ear when quite young, and it resulted inflamation of the membranes of the brain, which caused his sudden an untimely death.

William J. Arnott was born on his father's farm in Simcoe County 1862. He attended the public school and without going to a grammar school he tried his matriculation examination and passed successfully. H was quite young, but he commence to teach school in Tiverton, Bruce County, and later at Magnetewan in the Parry Sound District. He was of a very ambitious character ane while the summer holidays were in progress in his schools he went Manitoba and taught in the rural districts of that province, His teaching carreer was very interesting, as he went through the experiences of the pioneer schoolmaster.

In 1889 he entered Trinity College as a medical student and graduated with honors in 1893. He immediately commenced his practice in Berlin and opened up his office on Queen St. where Dr. Scharr is now located.

The deceased built up a large a successful practice and about six years ago he purchased the desirable residence and office on the corner Foundry and Weber street. Three years ago be established the Arnot institute in the residence formerly occupied by the late Dr. Mylius. In this time a large number of person afflicted with stammering or impedment of speech were treated, with excellent results, and the Institute was made favorably known throughout the continent.

In 1899 the deceased married Mis Helen Krug, of Tavistock, who survives to mourn the loss of a loving husband, together with two small hoys, who will have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.

The deceased was one of Berlin's most useful citizens, and was popular in educational, musical, political and religious circles. Two years ago he was elected a member of the Public School Board and took a keen interest in the welfare of the schools of the town. His experience as a teacher was of inestimable value to the Board, and he will be sorely missed He took a commendable interest in the Berlin Musical Society's Band and has been an officer for the last six or seven years, and at the time of his death he was president of the organization.

He was medical examiner of the Canadian Order of Foresters and an active member of the local Conservative Association. In the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church he was one of the managers, and three years ago he was elected as an elder, but declined to accept.

To know Dr. Arnott was to admire and esteem him. He was always courteous and while be held his views on various matters, he was never accused of being narrow, and he always respected the views and opinions of others. His death removes a citizen that Berlin could ill afford to lose, and his place will be hard to fill.

      DR. J. W. ARNOTT.

      Berlin's Medical Health Officer.

The subject of this sketch was born at Trenton, Northumberland County, Ont., Dec. 6th, 1862. At six years of age he lost his father, and shortly
afterwards the family moved to Sunnidale, Since County, where his boyhood days were spent. After leaving the public school he attended
Collingwood Collegiate Institute where he obtained a second class teacher's certificate, and afterwards taught school for nearly seven years, three years of which he was Principal of the Tiverton Public School. In October, 1889, be entered Trinity Medical College, Toronto, and graduated with frst class honors in April, 1893. After spending a few months in the hospitals of New York he came to reside in Berlin, and has been in active practice here since that time. He has been Medical Health Officer of the city since the death of the late Dr. Clemens and
it may safely be said that to his energy and oversight is largely due the fact that Berlin can compare favorably with any similar sized place in Canada in regard to its freedom from contagious diseases. In politics he is a Conservative and in religion a Presbyterian, being a member of the Board of Managers of St. Andrew's Church. In June, 1899, he married Miss Ellen Bell Krug, daughter of Mr. F. Krug, of Tavistock.

As well as attending to a growing general practice the Doctor has devoted considerable time to the treatment of specch defects, and his results
have, in every instance, been most satisfactory. People have come for treatment from Kentucky on the south and Victoria on the west, and we have yet to learn of one who went away dissatisfied.
