  • Notes
    • LACKNER, HARRY MACKIE was born in Berlin on December 10, 1883, the son of Dr. Henry G. Lackner. He was educated at the local schools, and entered the faculty of Medicine of the University of Toronto. He graduated in 1907 and spent a year in postgraduate study in Berlin and Vienna, followed by a year at the Toronto General Hospital

He was first mentioned in the Berliner Journal on March 17, 1898 when he severely burned his right hand while making taffy. The injury was not severe enough to interfere with his surgical career. The same paper announced on October 20, 1909, that he was going into practice with his father at the corner of Duke and Queen streets.

He was a skilful surgeon, and kept up to date by attendance at various surgical centres. He became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and at one time examined students for the Medical Council of Canada

In addition to his own practice, he built up a large consulting practice, with referrals from a considerable area. There are numbers of anecdotes concerning him, such as the one which appeared in the Kitchener-Waterloo Record, June 21, 1979, recounted by his son.

He had a variety of interests outside of his practice. He was a charter member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Rotary Club. He was in some measure responsible for the establishment by the Club of clinics for crippled children held on an annual basis with recognized specialists from Toronto in attendance.

He was one of the founders of the Chicopee Ski Club. He was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 24th. Field Ambulance.

He was also a founder of the Central Ontario Horse Show, an evidence of his interest in horses. As a breeder of American Saddle Horses he had a constant procession at his Chicopee Valley farm of interested visitors who came to see his prize winning stock. His farm was also the site of the annual medical picnic for the physicians of the area, at which he was the host. The same privilege was extended to other groups as well.

He was a member of the Board of Governors of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. When the University of Waterloo was established, h e was a member of the Board of Governors of that body. He was a member of the usual fraternal and professional organizations, and served as chief of surgery at both local hospitals.

He continued with his surgical practice until his final illness. His death took place on May 15, 1964, and he was survuved by his widow and one son, Dr. H. Allister Lackner.
