  Madonna Ahrens was born Martha Elizabeth Niles, but received the nickname Madonna from her husband, painter Carl Ahrens. In her youth she worked as an illuminator in the Roycroft Shop, where she met Ahrens. They had four children together - Laird, Penelope, Sigrid and Chloris.
