Notes |
- Frederick Strasser was Born in Mezingen, Wuertenburg, Germany, on Feb. 25th, 1833. Died at his home in Winston, Mo., July 16, 1914 aged 81 years, months, 22 days. He came with his parents to America in 1845 landing at Waterloo, Ontario, where he resided until the spring of 1872 when he moved to Winston where he remained until his death. He was married three times. The first took place in Canada when he was united to Miss Barbara Crauter who died in 1878. There were eleven children born to. this union of whom five sons and one daughter survive him. In 1880 he was married to Mrs. Caroline Meyer with whom he lived until her death in 1896. In 1898 he was married to Mrs. Rosina Herzog who still remains with us. The most important point in his life's history was reached in 1860 when he was born again by receiving Jesus Christ as his Savior. He chose the Evangelical Association as his church home and was all honored member of the same the remaining days of his life. He was one of the charter members of the local society and its welfare was ever first in all his plans. His place in Sabbath school and preaching service was rarely vacant. Only in recent years the weaknesses incident to old age made it impossible to attend the night services. His life was characterized by much praver. Not only was the fire on the family altar kept constantly burning but he always took time after each meal to spend awhile with God in the prayer closet. He never presumed to a start for public worship without first retiring alone to ask God's blessing on the service, and if it was a preaching service, to make intercession for the preacher and his message.
He was not a man of public affairs and cared little for society so-called. But no tongue speaks his name with other than respect Men valued him highly, for elements of manhood in its noblest form found expression in him. He was a man of strict integrity, and the community has lost in him that which it could ill spare.
To his posterity he leaves a legacy not possible to compute, of more real worth than that of Morgan or Rockefeller. Let his animus be the controlling element of your life and someone will some day say of you, "Let me die the death of the righteous and let my last end be like his."
There is, it is said, an island in a distant sea, from whose shores the fisherman sail to procure the treasures of the deep. During their absence thick mists often descend and cover the high land, cliff and beacon with so thick'a veil that these hardy mariners are left without a mark by which to steer their laden boats. No, they are not left to wander unguided on the pathless sea. When the time for their return arrives the women of the island mothers, sweethearts, sisters descend to the shores and raise the voice of song. Borne on the quiet air, their voices fall sweetly on the ears ot the loved ones at sea. Guided by the well known sound they steer their boats in safety to the shore.
And thus to thee, O sorrowing one! comes the voices of love from the celestial shore, as thou wanderest, a bewildered child of tribulation, on the misty sea of life. Thou has lost a friend; say rather thou hast ported with him. He has only gone a little before thee; thou art following him. You shall meet again in your Father's house and enjoy each other more happily than you could have done here below.
Funeral services were conducted by the pastor at the church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock after which interment was made in the Winston cemetery.
W. C. Johnson.

Frederick Strasser Dead
As announced in last week's Sentinel the condition of Mr. Strasser was very low at the time we went to press. A few minutes before the paper was out came word of his death which occurred at 3:30 o'clock last Thursday afternoon.
The latter part of May he underwent an operation at Kan- City for bladder trouble and for a time it appeared that he had a good chance for recovery. But his constiution was s so weakened .that he could not overcome the shock of the operation. Since his return. home about four weeks ago he had been under the constant care of a graduate nurse and everything possible was done to alleviate his "suffering and make his last days peaceful. He was conscious almost to the last and among his last words were his desire and willingness to answer the call. His was a long life of usefulness and right living and with his death a good man has gone to his reward.
