John Kaiser Wintermeyer came from Straubing, Bavaria Germany in 1869 with his parents and siblings: Anna 1863, Mary 1864, Rosina 1869 and Jacob 1874. John Wintermeyer and his younger brother Jacob Wintermeyer started their own business in Berlin Ontario prior to World War 1. The business was a glue factory. The brothers became involved in a dispute and John bought Jacob out of the business. During WWI there was a great need for glycerine, a by-product of glue, as a component of explosives. The family business did very well. John Wintermeyer asked his son Alfred Carl (a loan's officer at the Bank of Montreal) to join him in the business. Subsequently a businessman from Windsor Ontario asked John and son Alfred Carl to become 50/50 partners in Essex Meat Packers, which they did. Shortly thereafter John Wintermeyer was injured severely at work when a barrel fell on his legs and crushed them, leaving him paralysed. Both family businesses were thus sold and the accumulated capital from the sales was used to invest in the stock market. Alfred Carl invested in gold in 1930 after exploring investment opportunities in Kirkland Lake Ontario. He purchased shared in the Wright/Hargreaves Mines and the Hollinger-Lakshore Mines. His fortune was further made
