Notes |
- E. O. Ritz, Ex-Druggist, Dies at 76
A man who conducted a business on downtown King street longer than anyone else, Emil O. Ritz, 76, of 60 Heins Ave., died today at K-W Hospital.
Mr. Ritz was proprietor of the E. O. Ritz and Company, Ltd., drug store, King and Queen streets, for 52 years. He retired in 1955.
Mr. Ritz, a native of New Hamburg, kept the first quarter he had received in his first business transaction. He kept it in a wooden box at his home.
Several years ago the pharmacy was sold to Denton D. Tatum of Guelph.
DIPLOMA HAD 50 SEALS
Mr. Ritz, a graduate of the Ontario College of Pharmacy, "had a diploma which bore 50 seals, one for every year he practised as druggist.
He served as an apprentice with J. E. Neville's drug store after he left the college in 1903. Two years later he bought the business and started on his own. It was in 1917 the business moved to its present location.
Although most of the drug stores in those days were legally able to sell whisky, Mr. Ritz. was one of the few druggists who did not handle that commodity. Drug stores then opened at 7 a.m. and closed about midnight. They specialized more in drugs, prescriptions and cosmetics. Today some sell anything from "soup to bicycles."
