Notes |
- John Schafer
The death took place suddenly at the Fire Hall in Elmira on Thursday afternoon of last week of Mr, John Schafer, a highly esteemed and well known resident of the town. Mr. Schafer was acting as one of the jurymen at the William Miller inquest when death overtook him from heart failure. It was first thought that he was merely overcome with the heat in the crowded court room when the seizure came. The death of Mr. Schafer, who was 64 years of age and considered to be in is fairly good health, came as a great shock in his family. He was born at Rostock and came to Elmira when as young man to work at the harness-making trade. He later commenced business for himself and for forty years had had the trust and confidence of his customers. In 1896 he was married to Caroline Haack, who survives, together with one daughter, Miss Doretha of Toronto and two sons, Kilborn of Woodstock and Charles of Beamsville. Three sisters also survive. Mr. Schafer was a quite disposition and took no part in Municipal affairs, although at all times interested in anything that was for the welfare of the town. He was a member of Wesley United Church. The funeral which took place from his late home on Park street on Saturday afternoon, was largely attended and the many floral tributes testified to the esteem in which Mr. Schafer was held in the community. Rev. Wm. J. Fiddes conducted the funeral services, after which the remains were taken to the Elmira cemetery for internment. To Mrs. Schafer and family the sincere sympathy of the community is extended in their loss.
