- A big brother who never came home
.....April 13 the regiment reaches the outskirts of Assen. From there it's house-to-house fighting. The Canadians press into the town centre, capturing the town hall, the post office and other public buildings.
Bullets are still flying as delirious residents rush the Canadians, tossing flowers at them and offering up drinks. Dutch prisoners stream joyfully from the town jail. The celebration earns recognition in the official history of the Canadian Army: "Everywhere Dutch civilians danced in the streets and cheered their liberators."
Don Balcarras goes looking for Dave. It would be nice to talk about home. He finds someone who should know where to find his schoolmate. The reply is curt. "Ah, he got it." Don is dismayed.
Pte. Dave Hertzberger died April 13, seven days after writing his brother. His family is later told that he died in house-to-house fighting. Up to a dozen men with the Essex Scottish are killed liberating Assen.....
