- Famed German Cook, Augusta Theim Dies
Mrs. Augusta Thiem, noted for her German cooking in this part of Ontario and former own-er of the Old Landmark Inn, Conestogo, died Sunday at the Avondale Nursing Home. Waterloo.
The former Augusta Sabrov-ski, she was born Aug. 23, 1897, in Germany, a daughter of the late Mr. and. Mrs. August Sab-rovski, and came to Kitchener from Germany in 1923. She liv-ed in Conestogo since 1928 and operated the restaurant for 20 years. Before opening her own eat-ing establishment, she was cook at the Trail's End Hotel in Conestogo. It burned down about two years ago.
Her menus featured chicken. roast beef, salads, potatoes. carrots, cabbage and other trimmings along with several choices of dessert. Mrs. Thiem was on the cook-ing staff of Kaiser Wilhelm II, emperor of Germany from 1915 to 1917. In July she served her last , meal to members of Woolwich township council after 18 years of service. At that time Reeve Howard Ziegler said, "You have performed a real service to the, community."
She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Conestogo. Her husband, died four years ago. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Marie Langecker of Kitchener and Anna and Elisa, both of Germany. The body will be at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home. Waterloo, until noon Wednesday when removal will be made to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Conestogo, where Rev. Harold Brill, assisted by Rev. G. W. Becker of Guelph, will conduct the service at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Conestogo Lutheran cemetery.
