Jacob Staebler, Sr. Dead
Deceased Who Was 93 Years Old, Was Former Resident of Berlin
Mr. Jacob Staebler, Sr. of Tavistock, Ont., grandfather of H. L. Staebler of Berlin, passed peacefully away into the Great Beyond Wednesday evening. He was in his 93rd year. Mr Staebler's wife was a sister to the late Senator Merner and died in 1876. Mr. and Mrs. Staebler retired from the farm and removed to Berlin, where they resided fifteen years, afterwards going to Tavistock. Their union was blessed with a fairly large family. Of those surviving their parents are: Rev. Christian Staebler, Cleveland, Ohio, editor Evangelical Church magazine. Dr. D. Staebler, Practicing physician Brooklyn, NY. And Mrs. (Rev) L. K. Devitt, of New York State. The children who predeceased their father and mother are: J. M. Staebler of Berlin, John of Pacific Coast, George of Tavistock, Samuel of Pittsburg, and Mary, first wife of Rev. L. H. Wagner. The father was a robust man, very methodical and industrious. He lived the simple life. This accounts for his great age. He was a pioneer of the best type, as virtuous as he was industrious. He frequently preached to groups of early settlers and led in class meetings. These grand old men of Canada are disappearing one by one and it will be difficult if not impossible to replace them. On Saturday the remains of the patriarch will be laid to rest in Tavistock, by the Evangelical body of which he had been a life long member. 1a
