Notes |
- Stephen Meinzinger, musician, dies at 97
A funeral will be held Saturday for Stephen Meinzinger, well-known musician and music teacher in Kitchener, who died Wednesday.
Meinzinger, 97, a charter member of the Kitchener Musician's Union (now known as the Central Ontario Musicians' Association), had been a member of the K,W Philharmoic Choir and served as organist at three local churches.
He began his music training at age 17 when he took cornet lessons from Noah Zeller, director of the 29th Regiment Band. Meinzinger was later accepted as a band member. He also took violin lessons from a Toronto teacher.
He continued training in Warren, Ohio, and took violin instruction from the concertmaster of the Rochester Symphony in New York.
In 1912, he returned to Kitchener where he began teaching music. He charged 50 cents an hour at his studio at 66 Weber St. N.
He served as organist at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church from 1912 to 1916 and 1918 to 1920. In the 1940s, he was organist at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.
He also was assistant organist for St. Mary's and St. Joseph's German congregations after he retired from CPR, where he had worked in the telegraph office.
His daughter, Sister Barbara, said he continued to play for funerals and special services on request when he was in his 80s and played for his own pleasure up until a year ago.
A brother of the late Joseph Meinzinger, one of Kitchener's most colorful mayors, Meinzinger lived with his wife, the former Bertha Schnarr, at 47 Holborn Dr. He was a member of St. Anthony Daniel's Roman Catholic Church.
Meinzinger is survived by two sons, Carl of Cambridge; Vincent of Stoney Creek; three daughters, Theresa Kraftchick and Sister Barbara SSND, both of Kitchener; and Agnes Allen of Waterloo. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 19 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by his first wife Florence Schaefer; daughter Ruth Urig; four brothers and two sisters, Mary and Margaret. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Daniel's in Kitchener followed by burial at Mount Hope Cemetery.
