    • John Forsyth, Prominent Shirt Manufacturer, Succumbs at 63

John D. C. Forsyth. 63, well-known and widely respected shirt manufacturer of Kitchener, died at St. Mary.'s Hospital, last night, following a week's illness. He had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage.

Son of the late John Forsyth and the former Elizabeth Brooks., Mr. Forsyth was educated at the Margaret Ave. School and Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate in Kitchener.

After leaving school he secured a position in the men's wear department of Boehrner's Department Store in Kitchener and was soon placed in charge of that department. Later he entered into the business of Forsyth - Kimmel, wholesale button and tailor supplies manufacturers. During his stay with that company the idea of working with shirts carried a particular fascination about him.

Some years later he organized a company which developed into the shirt manufacturing industry. The small plant was located on St. West in Kitchener. The business grew to such proportions that it was soon necessary to expand. At this point he took over a shirt store and warehouse on Young St. The business again grew and it was necessary to expand. Here Mr. Forsyth decided to start the manufacturing of shirts.

From the head plant on Young St. in Kitchener the industry has expanded into two branch factories, one in Waterloo and the other in St. Marys, Ontario. There are branch offices of the Forsyth Co. in Montreal. Ottawa, Hamilton, Halifax. St. John, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Saskatoon, Calgary, Regina and as far away as Manchester, England.

Mr. Forsyth was an outstanding man in the shirt industry. During the past war he was appointed by Donald Gordon, chairman of the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, as administrator of meals and boys' furnishings division of the War-time Prices and Trade Board.

His alertness to better the industry in every way was borne out in the fact that his employees have always been treated "right". They received large Christmas bonuses at Yuletide and in addition, were treated to a Christmas Party every year. To make his employees more comfortable he built a restaurant and provided music during noon rours and rest periods.

Mr. Forsyth held many posts in the Twin Cities. He was a member of the K-W Hospital Board, Kitchener Board of Health, Waterloo County Health Association. Director of the Freeport Sanatorium Red Cross. Founder of the Kitchener Young Men's Club, Kitchener Chamber of Commerce, K-W Rotary Club. Westmount Golf and Country Club, a life member of the Foundation for Crippled Children and a member of the Craftmen's Club.

Surviving are his wife, the former Georgina Herties; two sons, John and James, at home; three daughters, Mrs George (June) Locheed, Mrs. R. K. (Joy) Ellis of Kitchener and Mrs. Leslie (Jane) Lovell of San Francisco. Calif., and two grandchildren.

The body is resting at the residence until Friday noon when it will be transferred to the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home in Kitchener at 2 p.m. A public service will be held at the St. John's Anglican Chuirch at 3 p.m., Saturday afternoon. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
