    • Lifetimes: Cindy Gerber 'a pioneer in the local food movement'

By Valerie HillSpecial to the Record

Before she died from ovarian cancer on Feb. 7, 2021, Cindy Gerber questioned whether her life had an impact, if she'd made a difference.

"She withheld judgment," said Ben. "She was a listening ear for a lot of people.....

Cindy was co-owner with husband Mark of Oakridge Acres, near Ayr. He ran the organic farm while she ran the country store on the property, where she remembered the names of hundreds of customers and their families....

"Cindy had such a huge vision," said Deb. "She was a pioneer in the local food movement."

Cam added, "She was doing the local food thing before local was cool."

Cindy was one of the forces behind Foodlink Waterloo Region, a map that identifies sources of local produce in the region....

In April 2019, Cindy was forced to slow her pace after a cancer diagnosis. Her death on Feb. 7 was not unexpected and, in typical Cindy style, she had planned every detail of her funeral, alleviating the stress from her family. Right to the end, she was thinking of others....
