- SUDDEN DEATH OF MISS HERTFELDER
Young Lady Passes Away While Picknicking With Friends at Conestogo.- Death was Due to Heart Failure.
May 24th
On Wednesday morning a jolly picnic party composed of the employes in the biscuit department of C. H. Doerr & Co.'s factory and few friends, lelt Berlin to spend Victoria Day along the river near Conestogo. One of the members of this party was Miss Emma Hertfelder, the 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Hertfelder, Louisa street, who appeared to be as bright and jovial as her companions, all of whom were bent on having a pleasant day's outing.
The morning was spent in fishing. after which the midday lunch was served and heartily partaken of. Shortly after Miss Hertfelder complained of feeling ill and appeared to be suffering from a spell of weakness, to which she was subject at intervals. She asked for some mustard, apparently desiting to have a plaster applied, but there was none on the grounds. Some of the young men hurried to the village for some whisky, and on their return found the young lady very weak, and as they were about to give her some of the liquid she fell over and died instantly. The unfortunate occurrence created consternation on the grounds and the various picnic parties broke up. One of the carioles was fitted up as a temporary ambulance and the body was brought home. The mother of the deceased was visiting relatives in Elmira and the sad news was conveyed to her, and she returned to Berlin immediately.
The young lady was greatly beloved by her parents and all her acquaintances, and her sudden and untimely death is sincerely regretted by the entire community.
