- August Schmiedel One of the few surviving members of the old Berlin Volunteer Fire Brigade died yesterday at the Elmira Private Hospital in the person of August Schmiedel, of 165 Wellington St. North.. He was born 89 years ago in Philadelphia but had lived most of his life here, coming to this community as an infant of one year. He was a former grocery store proprietor. Mr. Schmiedel attended St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
He was predeceased by his first Frank wife, the former Lisetta Frank, whom he married in 1888, on June 6, 1925.
His second wife survives with two sons, Paul of Kitchener and Albert of Windsor, a stepson, Thomas Nowak of this city; a daughter, Mrs. Hilda Waney of Killam, Alta.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. William Miller of Buffalo, N.Y., and Mrs. Ralph Bennett of Tillsonburg; two grandsons and five great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Bohlender of Toronto and Mrs. Harry Geisel of Killam, Alta., also survive.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home. Rev. A., W. Lotz will officiate and interment. will be made in St. Peter's Cemetery.
The body is resting at the funeral home.
