- Prominent Kitchener Manufacturer Was Ill for Four Weeks
Charles H. Doerr, prominent Kitchener manufacturer and former Public Utilities Commissioner, died at the K-W Hospital last night following a four-week illness. Death resulted from pneumonia following an operation. Deceased was 72 years old. Born at New Dundee, Oct. 31, 1866, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Doerr, he attended the public school there. He came to Kitchener as a young man and in 1892 founded the firm of C.H. Doerr and Company, confection manufacturers, becoming president of the concern at its incorporation in 1919. As an industrialist be became a member of the Canadian Manufacturers' Association and also of the Kitchener Board of Trade.
Former Alderman
Keenly interested in municipal affairs, he was elected to the Town Council in 1900, serving for three years. He retired in 1902. He came back to public life in April, 1919 when he was appointed to fill the vacancy on the Public Utilities Commission caused by the death of D. B. Detweiler. He served continuously until Dec. 31, 1937, when he retired. From 1933 to 1937 he was vice-chairman of the board. In his younger days he took an active interest in sports and was one of the original supporters of hockey. With a group of other men he was responsible for the erection of the Kitchener Auditorium on Queen street south, being one of the original directors. He was also actively identified with baseball, continuing his interest in sports after retiring from active participation in athletic organizations.
On Church Council
As a Lutheran he was closely identified with St. Peter's church serving up to the time of his death on the church council. He is survived by his wife Louise Glebe, one grandson, Carl M. Doerr, and one brother, Edward, of this city. Deceased was one of the early members of the old Lancaster Club and he was also a member of the North Waterloo Conservative Association. The funeral will be private from his late residence, 136 Weber street west, at 2.30 Saturday afternoon followed by a public service at St. Peter's Lutheran church at three o'clock. Rev. A. W. Lotz will officiate. Internment will be made at Mount Hope cemetery. The remains will be resting at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home until 10 o'clock when they will be removed to the residence.
