    • Deplorable Suicide in Galt

We deeply regret to be called upon this week to record the death on Wednesday morning, by his own hands, of an old and well known resident of this town, Mr. John Jardine. For a little more than a year past, Mr. Jardine has been failing both mentally and physically, and some time ago relinquished the business of blacksmithing which he had successfully carried on for many years. Since that time he has lived a retired life; and with all his faults and failings no one would ever have dreamed that he would have terminated his existence with his own hands.

On Wednesday morning Mr. Jardine got up, as was his habit, at an early hour, and having dressed himself left the house. He was not heard by any of the inmates, and consequently at what hour he went out is not known. Certain it is that he was seen in life by no one that morning; but shortly after 7 o'clock one of his nephews had occasion to go to the stable and was horrified to find the unfortunate man hanging by a rope from the stable loft. He immediately ran screaming to the house; and his screams attracting the attention of others Mr. Charles Cromwell ran to the stable, where he found the body hanging as described. Mr. Cromwell immediately cut the rope, and thinks that at this time a spark of life still remained; but by the time the body was laid on the floor the heart had ceased to beat and his spirit had taken its flight.

The unfortunate man had evidently gone very coolly to work to carry out his desperate intention. He had removed a couple of boards from the flooring of the loft, and had placed across the aperture thus made a strong stick, around which he had wound the fatal rope. He had then evidently placed a noose around his neck and jumped through the hole, giving a fall which must have produced speedy death. At what moment he committed the rash act is of course unknown; but from the appearance of the body, and the fact that Mr. Cromwell thinks there was a spasmodic gasp or two given while he was cutting the rope, it could not have been long previous to his being discovered.
