    • OLD PIONEER CALLED TO REST

WEAKNESSES OF OLD AGE GRADUALLY USE UP VITAL FORCES

On Sunday evening there passed away at her home on Hampton street, another of the old pioneers of this district in the person of Anna Margaret Hahn, relict of the late Bernhardt Muth. She was born in Obernklee, Hessen Darinstadt, Germany on the 2nd of February 1842 and was therefore in her 84th year when she died. In 1853 she came with her parents to what was then the village of Waterloo, where the family lived for a short time, then to Conestogo for a few years and then they moved to a small farm north-east of Elmira now owned by Mr. John S. Geisel. Those were the days of the beginning of things, the days of the simple life, when all farmers kept sheep, spun the wool themselves, had it woven by hand-weavers and made their own clothes out of the cloth so woven. The father of Mrs. Muth, the late John Hahn, had been a shepherd in the old country, and in early summer went around from farm to farm shearing the sheep. At this work of shearing sheep his wife was fully his equal. While the family was living at Conestogo the deceased returned to Waterloo to work, and there, 1861 she was married to Bernhard Muth. In 1862 they moved to a small farm near her parents' home. To Mr. and Mrs. Muth were born two children, one son Henry living in Elmira, and one daughter Elizabeth who was married to Mr. Meter Mattusch but, with her infant baby died about 39 years ago. Bernhard Muth died 40 years ago and about a year later Mrs. Muth came to Elmira to wait on her sick daughter and has remained here ever since, keeping house for her son-in-law. Besides her son, only one near relative survives her, namely her brother, Mr. Conrad Hahn. A number of nephews and nieces and more distant relatives also survive.

Mrs. Muth was a member of St. Paul's church, her membership extending back 62 years, longer than that of any other of the present members. The funeral service was consequently held at St. Paul's church yesterday afternoon, Rev. A. Gallmeier officiating. Interment was made in Elmira Union Cemetery. The following acted as pallbearers: George Klinck, Casper Heimbecher, C. W. Schierholtz, George Weismiller, John S. Geisel and Jacob Aberle.
