      THE LATE JAMES BAKER'S CAREER

Hespeler, May 7. James A. Baker, to whose death, we made & short reference an Thursday's. issue, was born in Waterdown, in 1828. His occupation was lumbering, which business he followed until coming to Hespeler in 1868, when he took over the hotel now known as the Commercial. He conducted this hotel tor three years, when he removed to Fisher's Mills, engaging there also in the hotel business, for about a year, when he returned. to Hespeler, bought the hotel now known as the Queen's Hotel, which he ran until 1884, when he retired to his late home on Lewis street. Mr. Baker was twice married. His first wife died in 1875 and his second, in 1893. For the last ten years of his life was an active member of the Methodist Church, and zealous in all good work. He was a staunch Reformer all his life, and when he came to Hespeler found himself surrounded by the enemy, the town being given over to the darkest, Toryism. The only other Liberals here then were the late A. B. Jardine and Wm. Harvey. The influence of these stalwarts, however, was soon felt and in a few years scores had imbibed their views and Liberalism secured a. foothold which it will never relinquish. The deceased has one brother and a sister living, Samuel Baker of Lexington, Mich. and. Mrs. Whitsel of Leamington, Ont. The funeral took place, today at 3 o'clock p.m., from his late residence, to the Hespeler Cemetery.
