  • Notes
    • Mary Bechtel "was born March 29th, 1833. She is married to William Barlow, a book-keeper. They reside in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and have a family of five children".

      Eby, Ezra E. (1895). A biographical history of Waterloo township and other townships of the county: being a history of the early settlers and their descendants, mostly all of Pennsylvania Dutch origin: as also much other unpublished historical information chiefly of a local character. Berlin [Kitchener, Ont.]: [s.n.].

      __________

      May 10, 1903.

      Mrs. Mary Barlow, the widow of the late William W. Barlow, passed away last Saturday evening. She was the daughter of John Bechtel,
      a prominent farmer and tanner in Waterloo, Ontario. She was married to Mr. Barlow in Canada and removed with her small family to this city in 1863. Three sons and two daughters survive her, Herman G., John B. and William H.. well known business men of this city, and Dr. Agnes B. Harrison and Mrs. E. W. Harrison, both now residing in Seattle, Washington. Mrs. Barlow was in every sense a domestic woman, reared among a prosperous but plain people, she brought to her husband the wifely qualities which made happy her modest home, and the gentle, guiding control of her husband and herself moulded the high personal character of her children. Alike in the dark days which come to most of us as in the brighter, she was always strong, hopeful and encouraging and gave about her in quiet ways through the small circle of intimates the kindly influence which made her home fittingly called a home. Gentle, consid-erate and kind to all, she will be so held in memory by those who knew her. And now there comes, on this Sabbath day, floating over the space of fifty years, the memory of her voice now so silent, leading the small congregation in the little Canada church, the sweet and prayerful evening hymn:

      "Teach me to live, that I may dread
      The grave as little as my bed;
      Teach me to die, that so I may
      Rise glorious at the judgment day."
      Words fitted for every hour, yesterday,
