Notes |
- Passing of James Dance
Well-Known Resident of Blenheim Township was Prominent in Municipal Affairs
James Dance, one of the most respected and highly esteemed residents of Blenheim township, passed away in Galt Hospital on Wednesday, May 21, in his 78th year, following a lingering illness.
Mr. Dance was a former member of the Blenheim Township Council for a period of six years, serving as a councillor for 2 years, deputy-reeve for 2 years and reeve for a similar period. He was a public-spirited citizen and took part in many projects for the improvement of the community in which he resided.
Mr. Dance was born in Ayr and resided practically all of his life-time in Blenheim township, living on the home farm since 1882. He was a valued member of Knox United Church, Ayr.
Surviving, besides his wife are: six sons, Wallace, Norman, James, John, William and Robert; three daughters, Mrs. Thomas Gibson (Isabel) of Webster, N.Y.; Mrs. Max Miles (Mae) of Galt and Mrs. Richard Oliver (Jean) of Toronto; and one step-daughter, Miss Marion Hall, at home.
The Funeral
The funeral, which took place on Saturday afternoon from his late residence, concession 6, Blenheim, to the Ayr Cemetery, was very largely attended. There were many beautiful floral tributes.
The services were in charge of Rev. R. A. Steed, pastor of Knox United Church, Ayr. The beautiful hymn, "What a Friend we have in Jesus", was sung by Rev. Mr. Steed and Mrs. Steed.
The pallbearers were the six sons, while those who acted as flower-bearers were: James Kyle, John McVittie, Roy Elmes, George Stockton, Stewart Hamilton and John A. Kennedy.

There passed away at her home, lot 2, con. 6, Blenheim on Friday morning, Sept. 16, a very estimable lady in the person of Mrs. James Dance, after a short illness of only about a week. - Mrs. Dance, whose maiden name was Janet Hall, was the eldest daughter of Walter and Isabelle Hall, Ayr, and was very highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends, who deeply sympathize with her sorely bereaved husband and family. The deceased, who was married in Blenheim in 1896 by the Rev. J. S. Hardie, the then pastor of Stanley-st. church, Ayr, was in her 37th year, and strangely enough the day of her death was the 14th anniversary of her wedding day, and the 13th anniversary of her eldest son's birthday. She is the third member of Mr. and Mrs. Hall's family that has entered into eternal rest within a period of slightly over two years - the others being Mrs. John R. Easton of Paris, and Mr. John D. Hall of Ayr. Mrs. Dance leaves a family of five - four boys and one girl. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon to Ayr cemetery, followed thence by a large concourse of friends and acquaintances. The services at the home and the grave were conducted by Rev. D. I. Ellison. The pallbearers were Messrs. James and William Scott, Charles Rafferty, Alex. Kennedy, Murdo McRae and Sheldon Stockton.
