      Gottlieb Merner son of the late Jacob and Susanna Merner died at Zurich on Monday aged 93 years. He was born in Berne Switzerland, July 12th 1830; immigrated with his parents to New Hamburg at the age of 7 years where he made his home until the year 1856, moving to Huron County. He founded the village of Berne in 1856 now called Blake. Here he carried on a mercantile business also a tannery besides other lines of trade. In the year 1867 he moved to his farm on the Bronson Line, Hay Township, where carried on extensive farming until 1899 when he retired to the village of Zurich where he resided until his death. In the year 1855, he married Mary Ann Bleam, daughter of Christian and Mary Campbell Bleam. To this union 10 children were born; W.H. and J.W. of Winnipeg; S.A. of Hensall; J.J. of Seaforth; J.D. of Detroit; G.A. of Dashwood; E.F. of Bayfield; also Mrs. C. Eilber of Crediton; Mrs. W. C. Calfas of Zurich; all of whom with his aged partner who has passed the 87th milestone survive. One daughter died in infancy. Besides his family he had three adopted children Mrs. Will Otto who died many years ago; Mrs. Fred Witwer, of Exeter; and Mrs. John Weber of Michigan. Forty seven grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren survive. He was of a family of seven brothers and three sisters who have all predeceased him. Late Senator Merner, Christian and Frederick Merner of New Hamburg were brothers. The funeral took place on Thursday at 2 o'clock to the Bronson Line cemetery on the corner of his old homestead.1a
