  Ex-Ald William Pieper is Called To Great Beyond He Had Been Ill Since Last January But Death Came Suddenly, A Successful and Well-known Citizen of the County The loss of an ex-alderman of the city is reported today in the person of Mr. William Pieper, who passed away at his home, 777 West King Street, last evening, after an illness of ten months duration, during which time the deceased been confined to his room continually. But while Mr. Pieper had been suffering with the affliction there were no signs of an immediate turn for the worst. Very suddenly, however, at about 4: 25 o'clock yesterday afternoon, what unfortunately proved the final relapse set in the way of a stroke, and, while he retained consciousness up to the last moment, he passed peacefully away at about 6: 25 o'clock. Mr. Pieper was widely known in the northern part of the county where he spent his early years and where in more recent years he had lived retired after a successful business career. He has many admirers here and in fact wherever he had made acquaintances. They will regret to hear of his death. The deceased was a native of Germany but came to this country with his parents when he was only four years. He was sixty-five years of age. Arriving in this country the family settled in New Hamburg, where he spent his early years and received his rearing. At various times he was employed at Wellesley and Baden. Almost thirty-three years ago he moved to the West. Here he was one of those who by their ability, energy, foresight and confidence contributed t the business development of the Prairie Provinces. The subject of this sketch became interested in the grain elevator business in which he was successful. For fourteen years he was manager of the Ogilvie Milling Company in Winnipeg. Later he engaged in the hardware business with W. G. Liesemer in Didsbury, Alta. Eight years ago he retired and came to this city. The good and welfare of the city attracted his activities for several years. He entered the municipal field in 1911, being elected to the Council of that year. He served on the City Council in that year and in 1912 and 1913. During the last two named years he was chairman of the Sewer Committee being the chairman of the first sewer committee after the Council had taken over the management of the sewer system, after the electors had voted for the abolition of the Commission form of management. During Mr. Pieper's tenure of office as chairman of the Sewer Committee the new trunk sewer in the West and south wards was built. In the city's business as in his own he showed hard application to his post of duty. Mr. Pieper retired from municipal life in 1913. Surviving the deceased are his wife, Elizabeth Fink, formerly of Wellesley, and three children who are Mr. William S. Pieper of Heidelberg, Mr. Edward C. Pieper of Port Colborne and Mrs. Milton Zinkann of this city. One son predeceased him a few years ago. Two brothers and one sister also survive. They are Mrs. Charles Piper of Gretna, Man., Mr. Christian Pieper also of that town and Mrs. John Ritz of Dewet, Man. Mr. Charles Pieper was here last week at the bedside of the deceased and on Saturday he left for Wiarton to visit other relatives. Mr. Pieper was of the Methodist faith.
