    The House of Industry and Refuge. In 1868, 141 acres was purchased on Frederick Street in Berlin (now Kitchener) and the house opened on June 15, 1869. The original building housed 100 and operated as an industrial farm, which raised crops and livestock. The residents worked for their keep if possible, those most did not. The House eventually became a strictly a residence of the aged and later relocated and renamed Sunnyside.

    • Died - The death took place at Kitchener last Saturday of Mrs. Lips, mother of Mr. Conrad Lips, of this town, at the age of 88 years. Deceased was a native of Germany and came to this country many years ago. She resided for many years at Wilmot Centre and for some time in Wellesley. She was a faithful member of the Evangelical church at Wilmot Centre. Her remains were brought here on Sunday and the funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon to the Evangelical church and interment took place in the Wilmot Centre cemetery, where her husband, who passed away many years ago, lies buried. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Brand. The deceased is survived by one son and one daughter besides several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
