- WATERLOO MINISTER'S SUDDEN DEATH
Rev. J. C. Morlock, a Half Century in Evangelical Ministry. Highly Esteemed.
One of the most beloved and faithful ministers in the Evangelical Church of Canada, Rev. John C. Morlock, Waterloo, was called to his reward at ten o'clock on Saturday evening when be was seized with a sudden heart attack. He was in his 79th year. Mr. Morlock enjoyed excellent health practically all his life until last Wednesday when be was confined to his home. Mr. Morlock appeared in good spirits on Saturday evening and chatted with Rev. H. A. Kellerman and Rev. J. G. Litt who called, and his passing a half hour later came as a distinct shock to his family and friends.
Although retired from the active ministry five years ago, Mr. Morlock conducted over 100 services relieving various pastors from time to time. He was pastor in fifteen different charges during his 49 years of active ministry, at Elmira, Sebringville, Hespefer, Colborne, Maitland, Hamilton, South Cayuga, Listowel, Milverton, Dashwood, Walkerton, Morriston, New Hamburg, Rodney and St. Jacobs.
The late Mr. Morlock was born in Morriston, Ontario, in 1853. He attended North Central College at Naperville, Ill., and his first church appointment was Elmira in 1878. He married Miss Rebecca Heximer in 1881, who survives with three sons and four daughters, namely, Milton of Pennsylvania, Charles of Tacoma, Wash., Jack of St. Jacobs; Mrs. Geo. L. MacKenzie, Kitchener; Mrs. Arthur Cunningham, Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. Geo. E. Smythe, Stratford; Mrs. Lambert Bowman, Guelph; also ten grandchildren.
In May, 1931, Mr. and Mrs. Morlock celebrated their golden wedding. Hundreds of friends, including many associate pastors in the Twin-City and district, attended the funeral which took place from the home, 85 Queen St. N., Waterloo, on Wednesday afternoon. A simple and impressive service was conducted at the Emmanuel Evangelical Church and home by the pastor, Rev. H. A. Kellerman. Rev. S. R. Knechtel assisted at the house service. At the church Rev. Mr. Kellerman preached the sermon while Rev. J. P. Hauch of Stratford, a former pastor, gave a brief address in which he paid tribute to the sterling qualities of the late Mr. Morlock whose work during his fifty years of active ministry were a source of inspiration and help to those who had the privilege of his acquaintance. Others who assisted in the service were Rev. J. G. Litt, Rev. E. H. Bean and Rev. W. J. Zimmer-man. A quartette comprising Revs. E. Burn, W. M. Sippell, A. W. Sauer and K. Gretzinger sang, while Miss Perschbacher presided at the organ.
Interment was made in Mount Hope cemetery where Rev. H. A. Kellerman and Rev. G. F. Barthel officiated. The pall bearers were: Revs. W. J. Yager, A. E. Pletsch, W. E. Beese, C. H. Cornwell, A. Clemens and H. H. Leibold.
The floral tributes sent by friends were numerous and beautiful.
