    • Tragic Occurrence - John Hugh Lillico Meets Death in Accident

John H. Lillico, former reeve of Blenheim Township and warden of Oxford County and Progressive candidate in the North Oxford federal election of 1921?, died at the home of Walter Barrie, on mile from Ayr, at 5: 45 Friday afternoon as the result of being severely scalded by steam which sprayed over his body as he stood pinned between a traction engine and a threshing machine on the 10th concession of Blenheim Friday afternoon. Mr. Lillico was one of the best known and most capable farmer in Oxford County, and the news of his tragic death caused a profound sensation, not only in the community in which he lived, but also in the surrounding district. His many years of public service to the county and township brought him largely before the public, and he was known as a deep student of public affairs, an inveterate reader and a public speaker of much ability. His untimely and removes from Oxford county one of the most prominent men. The accident which ended fatally for Mr. Lillico took place about eleven o'clock Friday forenoon, while he was moving a threshing outfit on the Barrie farm. When ascending a step hill, the engine stalled, and the machine began to back down the hill, ?ing out of control. The separator remained stationary while the engine crashed into it, and Mr. Lillico, who was standing between the two parts of the outfit was crushed in the collision. In the crash, the steam gauge on the engine was broken, and, helplessly pinned between the heavy machinery, Mr. Lillico was subject to a stream of steam, which scalded him badly. With the assistance of Mr. Barrie and son, he was ? from his perilous position, and taken to the home of Mr. Barrie, while medical aid was summoned. In spite of all that could be done to save him, his condition gradually became weaker, and he passed away at a quarter to six o'clock. Mr. Lillico, who was in his 59th year, was born in the township of Blenheim, which he later served faithfully in many capacities. He lived all his life on a farm in that township, and was very successful in his student calling. A man of studious mind, he devoted all his leisure time to a study of public questions, and began his public service as a school trustee of his home section, which he served for many years before being called to the higher service of the township. In 1908, he was elected to the township council of Blenheim, and sat in that body as a councillor for seven years. On Deputy-Reeve Harley becoming Reeve of Blenheim in 1915, Mr. Lillico was chosen to take his place as deputy-reeve. After two years as deputy, Mr. Lillico became reeve of the township. In 1919 he was elected to the highest office in the gift of the county, that of Warden. Mr. Lillico's next appearance in public life was in the 1921 Dominion election campaign. He had some time previously been selected as the candidate for this election by the Progressives of North Oxford, and after a stirring campaign, he was defeated by a narrow margin, running third in a very close contest with Dr. Sinclair, M.P., and E. W. Nesbitt. In this campaign, he made a splendid showing as an excellent speaker and a man well versed in the affairs of his country. In addition to his public service, Mr. Lillico was an ardent church worker. At the time of his death he was a trustee of the Knox United Church, Ayr. As a man, he had the profound respect of every citizen of the community, and the deepest sympathy of a wide circle of friends goes out to his bereaved family. Mr. Lillico is survived by his wife, four sons, Alex at Acton, McIntyre at Ayr, .and Douglas and Robert at home and three daughters, Catherine, Jessie and Christina, also at home. The funeral on Monday to Ayr Cemetery was largely attended by sorrowing relatives and friends, the services being in charge of Rev. J. W. Currie, assisted by Rev. G. I. Stephenson. There were many beautiful floral tributes. The pallbearers were as follows: Messrs. I. Perrin, J. Black, W. Lillico, M. Lillico, D. Brown and A. Barton.
