  PIONEER RESIDENT DIES AFTER ILLNESS Mrs. Elizabeth Gmelin Came To Canada As Child From Alsace Lorraine Death removed an old pioneer resident of this district in the person of Mrs. Elisabeth Gmelin, relict of the late John Gmelin, who passed away at 11 o'clock, last evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. E. Ratz, Fountain street. The deceased who was in her 84th year was born of French parents in Detweiler, Alsace-Lorraine, France, in 1843. Two years later her family moved to Canada and settled on a farm sear Kossuth at a time when Preston was but a small village. The late Mrs. Gmelin was confirmed as a member of St. Peter's Lutheran church by Rev. Emmanuel Wurster, founder of the church here and great grandfather of the late town clerk Geo. Wurster. In 1870 she became the bride of John Gmelin of Preston and has resided here ever since. Her husband predeceased her thirty-nine years ago. The late Mrs. Gmelin was much loved and respected by all who knew her and during her long life had enjoyed good health until within seven months of her death. Those who remain to Mourn her loss include two sisters, Mrs. (Rev.) A. R. Schultz, of Tonowanda, New York and Mrs. Katherine Richert, of Detroit, also one daughter, Mrs. A. R. Ratz, Fountain street, and one son Carl Gmelin, Fountain street, as well as numerous grandchildren. A second daughter. Mrs. Smith of Preston, predeceased her mother by several years. The funeral will be held at 2: 30 o' clock, Saturday afternoon, from the home of her son-in-law and daughter. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Ratz, 138 Fountain street, interment to be in the Preston cemetery.
