- OWNER OF WALPER HOUSE SUCCUMBS
Joseph Zuber, Sr., Made Hotel business Both His Work and Hobby
Joseph Zuber, Sr., well-known Kitchener hotelman, died at the Walper House last evening in his 68th year following a two-year illness. He had been confined to bed practically since Christmas, but three weeks ago was in his office for a short time. Born and raised in Waterloo County, Mr. Zuber as a young man entered the hotel business, and eventually became one of Ontario's best known hotel operators. He gained the reputation of being the largest individual hotel owner in the Dominion, all other hotels as large or larger than the Walper House being under company control. The deceased was born on May 11, 1864 on a farm near New Germany, the son of the late Charles Zuber and Josephine Lehmann.
Owned three Hotels
His hotel career started in a modest way when he bought the Grand Central Hotel, now Hotel Kitchener, 41 years ago, from the late Joseph Mattell. Subsequently he bought the Market Hotel, which was situated where the present comfort station is located but which hotel he himself never occupied. In 1910 he purchased the Walper House, succeeding the late Ed. Hollinger as occupant. At one time the deceased owned the three hotels simultaneously. Subsequently he sold the Market Hotel which was operated for many years by E.E. Bowman, now deceased. Mr. Bowman sold it about 12 years ago to the city and the buildings were torn down to make room for the new city hall and the comfort station. The deceased, however, retained his ownership of the Walper House and the Grand Central Hotel. The last mentioned property is now operated as the Hotel Kitchener by Emil Ruf under lease and has been renovated and transformed.
Mr. Zuber's venture into the hotel business was successful. Under his direction the Walper House had to be enlarged from time to time in order to provide sufficient accommodation for the travelling public, and eventually the hotel capacity was more than doubled. The deceased always delighted in undertakings providing improved facilities and accommodation for his patrons, and he enjoyed a wide popularity with the travelling public.
Hotel His Life
The deceased was exclusively an hotelman. Keeping hotel and catering to the public was not only a business for him, it was also a hobby and a pastime. He therefore did not seek such avenues of leisure as clubs and social organizations, and spent practically all his time at the hotel. Mr. Zuber is survived by his wife, Sarah Hummel, and one son, Joseph, Jr., operating and managing the Walper House; three daughters, Mrs. B.J. Zoellner, Mrs. Leo Donohue, and Mrs. George Scott, all of Kitchener. Also surviving are two brothers and three sisters. Charles of Kitchener and Henry on the old homestead, New Germany; Mrs. L. Shropshire, Preston, Mrs. E. Schmuck, also of Preston, and Mrs. Mary Hummel of Kitchener. The funeral will be held at 10 am, Friday from St. Mary's Catholic Church to Mt. Hope Catholic Cemetery.
