  • Notes
    • There passed away in Harriston on March 2nd, 1919, one of the old pioneers of that town in the person of Mrs. A.D. Montgomery. The deceased lady was the eldest daughter (Mary) of the late George Sheard of North Dumfries. She was born in Mirfield, Eng., and when very young with her parents moved to Puslinch. Six weeks after landing in Canada her mother (Ann Connell) died. Shortly afterwards her father purchased and lived on the farm now owned by Mrs. Gilbert Wallace. From there she was married in 1855 and lived at the old Black Horse, where Andrew D. and Robt. Montgomery (brothers) carried on blacksmithing and carriage building. When they dissolved, Andrew D. moved up Chesterfield, and later to Harriston, where Mrs. Montgomery resided 60 years, her husband predeceasing her 20 years. All through life she enjoyed excellent health, but during the last two years showed signs of gradually failing strength, terminating in a slight stroke of only 24 hours duration. Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery had 11 children, of whom only five are living - George in Elgin, Ill., David in Hamilton, John, Peoria, U.S., Wm. In business n Harriston, Bella at home on the Public School staff. There are six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A sister and brother also survive - Mrs. George Copeland, New Westminster, B.C., and Thos. M. Sheard, Galt.
